LBSSA Sailing Association            Click Here for Pictures

“Sunfish” sailboats are  available for use by members upon request.

Charter: LBS Sailing Association: To teach residents rigging, and sailing of Sunfish, to race, to use Marina facilities & lake, and social aspect of sailing group.

Lake Barrington Shores Sailing Association (LBSSA)

Under the auspices of the Social and Sports Committee and with approval from LBS Management and Master Board, the LBSSA has access to a fleet of 16 community owned Sunfish class sailboats. While homeowners do not need to be a member of LBSSA to use a Sunfish, people are encouraged to learn how to take care of the boats and the rigging prior to use. LBSSA offers classes in rigging, sailing, capsizing and righting and in the rules and regulations of official Sunfish Class sailing competitions.

During the course of a typical year LBSSA offers instructional sessions in the spring, official and unofficial races between members during the summer and fall, and social events. We utilize the Marina for some of these events, and the beach, pontoon boat and recreation center for other parties. Homeowners may join as social members even without sailing knowledge or interest.

Races are the heart of LBSSA competitions and Race days are looked upon as the highlight of the season. Race Days occur every other Sunday during the summer and early Fall. One category of races, called the Nugent Series, is composed of eight race days, of three races each. The winner of this prestigious award gets their name engraved on the large trophy and allowed to take it home for the winter. This Series has been going on for more than 20 years, and is named for a generous donor in memory of a family member.

Other races occur on July 4 when boats, and boaters, and spectators and pontoon boat officials decorate in the holiday tradition. On every race day, provisions are made for a pontoon boat ride afterwards to discuss the day, have some socialization and food and beverages, and prepare for a cookout on the beach.

LBSSA has been in existence for nearly all of the time LBS has been in operation. It's known as a fun organization, with equal emphasis on competition and social activities.

Sharecroppers             Click here for Pictures

Charter:LBS Sharecroppers: The Sharecroppers is a group of LBS residents and a few invited guests that have one purpose in mind: to encourage a spirit of camaraderie among the residents though gardening.  Each gardener plans and plants his/her individual garden and then toils to achieve a harvest to share not only with fellow residents but also with the Wauconda/Island Lake Food Pantry.  We do have social gathering at the garden as well as a Wine and Cheese Welcoming Party in the spring, and Harvestfest in the fall.

Most residents of Lake Barrington Shores left shovels, rakes, hoses, and other gardening tools at their previous residences.  We thought we had left gardening ambition behind too.  But, almost twenty-five years ago a group of “former gardeners” organized the Shorecroppers.  they negotiated with the developer for the use of a parcel of land.  Wooden walks were constructed.  A water system assembled.  Tools were collected.  Over the years, the membership of Shorecroppers has changed and increased.  The membership is informal.  Any resident is eligible to grub in the dirt.  Many days, weeks, and even a couple of months might pass while one gardener doesn’t “howdy” another.  Members assemble formally twice a year: in the spring to select the garden area they want to grub; and in the fall, for the Harvest Fest, a celebration of our harvest.  Truly ….. shorecropping is “farming” in luxury ….. complete with waterworks and walkways and springtime plowing.

Plowed garden plots, 1 mile from center, available in April.  Call the LBS office to join.

Shoresmen Golf

The Shoresmen  are primarily retired or semi-retired residents of Lake Barrington Shores.  A few members who are non-residents participate weekly with the Shoresman .  The only requirement is to have a golf membership at LBS.

The Shoresmen golfers meet every Wednesday morning at 7:00am with a 7:30am start.  A different game (team or individual) is played each week (18 holes) and year donation of $5.00 is used for prizes – LBS Golf Shop Credit.  Male house guests and friends are welcome to participate.  Official LBS handicaps are used.  However, temporary handicaps will be assigned while waiting for official handicaps to be established.

The Lake Barrington Shoresmen provides an opportunity for men who live in Lake Barrington Shores to get better acquainted.  There is a lunch and a get together on the first Thursday of every month.  The Shoresmen are by no means restricted to retirees.  The governing factor is the availability of the individual for the monthly first Thursday lunch or other events.  Many of the current members are still employed, but manage to work the luncheons and events into their schedules reasonably often.

A number if additional activities have been added in the meantime, such as cards at the reception center, dinner theater parties at Mariott’s Lincolnshire Theater 5 times a year on Thursday evenings, dances with the big band sound, trips to Arlington Park and other Chicago attractions.  The year culminates with a Christmas party at the Recreation Center.  There are no dues, no by-laws, no officers, no committees.  It is all just for fun.

Solos Social Events

Cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and dinner is served at the LBS Recreation Center immediately following play.  Cocktails and hors d’ oeuvres are scheduled from 6:30 pm and dinner will start promptly at 8:00pm.

It is the intention of the elected board of the golfing solos that the social events focus not just on golf, so specific theme evenings are scheduled at this time with such favorites as beach party, silent auction, winter golf classics, trivia night, plus regular yearly features.

Once a year we have a competitive 18 hole match with our counterparts the Sundowners who meet on opposite Fridays to play for possession of the Silver trophy.
